We have to say another huge thank you to Worthing Fire Station for supporting Iona-May as one of their local causes at their Open Day. We were presented with a cheque for a massive £2000 - we are so very grateful!
Especial thanks goes to Debbie and Darren for agreeing to support Iona-May and for taking the time out to introduce Iona-May and her little brother Henry to the Fire Station before the event. As Iona-May cannot see it is important for her to feel at ease with her surroundings so a ride in the fire engine (just around the yard) with the sirens going really helped to do that. She had a really good time.
And as for Henry he loved dressing up and learning to work the water hose and rolling it up – a real fireman in the making. You really made his day!
• And on the day Becky and Mark’s Zumba Flashmob – wow what a turn-out. Some estimated 200 people were dancing in the arena – the atmosphere was electric – thank you guys! And of course, we even had some of the firemen joining in to – secretly practising ready for the big day – see you all in class next week? I was born 9 weeks premature, and as a result of a complicated birth have Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy.
The doctors didn't hold much hope for me, and gave my mummy the devastating news that I would not live past 72 hours at one stage, and although I have been strong and fought on I can not sit, stand, walk, or talk and I am registered blind. I suffer from seizures and have bilateral hip displacia (for which I am awaiting major surgery)
I am reliant on the assistance of my family and carers for all aspects of daily life.
I am nearly 5 and have just started primary school, (I go to Palatine special needs school in Goring)
I live in a house in East Preston, and my bedroom is upstairs. My mummy has to carry me up and down the stairs everyday, which is very hard for her as I am getting too big to carry.
I also have carers that come to look after me sometimes to give my mummy a break, but due to health and safety regulations and insurance policies they are not allowed to carry me up the stairs or lift me around the house, so mummy has to stay close in case I need her. (Which kind of defeats the point!)
It is also very dangerous when mummy has to give me a bath beacuse our bathroom is too small for specialised equipment so she has to lift me in and out and when I am slippery it is very difficult for her.
I need to have my house adapted to accommodate me and my wheelchair, I need a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. As well as having doors widened and thresholds lowered for access.
All of this comes at great expense, we have been told in the region of £60,000.
I am entitled to a grant from the local authorities but this will only cover half of what I need to complete the work.
This will make a huge difference to my life and to those who care for me, so I am asking for your help......
PLEASE HELP ME TO RAISE £30, 000 TO BUILD ME A BEDROOM AND CHANGE MY LIFE FOR THE BETTER.
